What kind of decisions do you make in life? Are you Penny Wise and Pound Foolish?
You find out your business is getting sued, so you go out and find the cheapest attorney you can to represent you. You might lose the case but at least you will save on legal fees. Smart move, right?
Your child is needs surgery, so you shop around and find the cheapest surgeon possible to perform the task, after all, all surgeons are the same, right?
You finally buy that luxury car you have been dreaming of for years. However, when they charged you $100 for the first service you started taking it to the local service station. The car doesn’t run that great anymore, but it still looks great and that is what really matters, right?
Your business’s IT systems are a mess and the whole IT thing seems like gibberish to you, nothing is working properly, and your staff is frustrated. IT guys cost a bundle, but all you need is the cheapest guy out there to fix things when they break. All IT companies are the same anyway, right?
Like doctors and attorneys, not all IT companies are equal. Today’s modern IT services companies operate as Managed Service Providers (MSP) and focus on keeping your company’s technology running at peak performance. The MSP’s (Managed Service Providers) have made a significant investment in technologies that find and fix problems before they impact your business. They are also trained in the myriad of rules and regulations to which your business must comply or face serious fines.
There are still a lot of legacy Break/Fix IT companies out there – like Tony, with the pony tail and pickup truck that shows up when stuff breaks and manages to get stuff running again. He is cheap and you save money -- if you do not count all the down time or that great Office Manger that quit over frustration with your technology.
There is a lot of talk about disrupters today. We have Uber® in the transportation industry, Amazon® impacting retailers by providing everything online, AirBnB® impacting the hospitality industry, and many more. These companies all have one thing in common, they leveraged technology to change their industry. This is the same way MSP’s operate. They have invested in and leveraged technology to disrupt the traditional IT Break/Fix Service Model.
In doing so, MSP’s have changed the focus from fixing broken systems and technology (with associated down time) to keeping technology running at peak performance. This eliminates down time, increases productivity and reduces staff frustration. In addition, by offering flat rate monthly service plans, they provide companies with predictable monthly expenses and cheaper overall costs once you look at the entire picture.
So, in closing, we harken back to that old adage – Penny Wise and Pound Foolish – save pennies in initial service costs but waste pounds on one-time charges, lost productivity, and unmeasured expenses.
